ESL Worksheet: Imperatives
Introduction to Imperatives
Imperatives are used to give orders, instructions, or advice. They are very simple because they
usually start with the base form of a verb. For example: 'Sit down.' 'Don't run.'
Examples of Imperatives
Examples of positive imperatives:
- Open the door.
- Read the book.
Examples of negative imperatives:
- Don't touch that!
- Don't be late.
How to Form Imperatives
To form an imperative:
- Use the base form of the verb (without 'to').
- For negative imperatives, use 'Don't' + the base form of the verb.
Examples:
- Base form: 'Eat your vegetables.'
- Negative form: 'Don't eat too fast.'
